Bighorn National Forest firefighters will burn slash piles in areas around Forest Service Road 26, the Red Grade Road, in the next few weeks.

Piles are located near Swamp Creek, Big Goose Ranger Station, Spear-O-Wigwam, Coffeen Park, and along the road into Dome Lake.

Burning will occur only when sufficient snow is on the ground to minimize the chance for a fire to spread. Smoke may linger in the drainages in the evenings and may be visible from Sheridan and to people recreating on the Red Grade Road.

The slash piles are the product of fuels reduction projects that are designed to increase the defensibility of structures and access routes.

For more information about slash pile burning along the Red Grade, contact the Tongue Ranger District in Sheridan at 307.674.2600.
