Revised North Platte River plan available for public comment

— August 22, 2013

(Press release) The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rawlins Field Office (RFO) is making the revised North Platte River Recreation Area Management Plan (RAMP) and environmental assessment (EA) available for a 2-week public comment period.

In response to public input, the RFO has completed site specific inspections, and modified the RAMP to include the following preferred alternatives:

— Boat-in Campground–Only a primitive campsite with boundary signs proposed.

— Corral Creek Campground–Develop horse corrals and improve river access.

— Bennett Peak Campground–Remains as originally proposed with additional parking and boat ramp expansion.

— Prospect Undeveloped Recreation Site–Improve access road for safety, and reduce resource damage from erosion and run-off.

— Big Creek Undeveloped Recreation Site–Maintain existing access on current two-track connecting Forest Service Road 211.

— Special Recreation Permits (SRPs)–Up to three new SRPs would be considered every other year until reaching Middle Country limits.

The RFO manages more than 122 miles of the North Platte River from the Colorado border to the Seminoe Reservoir, including numerous public access points for recreation. The river provides crucial winter range for elk and is a magnet for wildlife such as bighorn sheep, bobcat, black bear, mountain lion, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, muskrat, coyote, raccoon, beaver, Greater Sage-grouse, Canadian goose, mallard, great blue heron, kingfisher, pelican, golden and bald eagle, red-tailed and ferruginous hawk, and prairie falcon. The North Platte River is also classified as a blue-ribbon trout fishery with a section managed for “wild” trout.

Written substantive comments are requested by Sept. 6, and may be emailed to BLM_WY_North_Platte_River_[email protected] (include “RAMP Comment” in the subject line), mailed, or hand-delivered to the BLM RFO, North Platte RAMP, P.O. Box 2407, 1300 N. Third St., Rawlins, WY  82301.
