Federal officials believe the world’s largest coal miner Peabody Energy may not meet its obligation to provide financial assurance of complete mine cleanup in three states, including Wyoming.
Reps. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) and Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) introduced legislation yesterday to repeal an offset to the transportation bill that President Obama recently signed into law. The transportation legislation included a measure to cap at $15 million abandoned coal mine reclamation program payments.
Wyoming has been successful in mitigating abandoned coal mine problems, but it continues to receive large amounts of funding from the Abandoned Mine Lands Fund. That money has been spent on a variety of non-mine projects, from infrastructure to research.
